LANGARA COLLEGE PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE & MENTORSHIP

 This program was designed for successful graduates of the Therapeutic Yoga for Trauma and Resilience Certificate program who hold a minimum 200-hour yoga teacher certification or those wishing to apply for permission from the Program Coordinator*. We have space for 7 teachers (2 at each site & 1 at the MDABC Wellness and Counselling Center). Placements will be determined once the cohort is full.

Students will practice specific teaching methodologies including how to create safe, trauma-informed, strengths-based classes to meet the needs of a diverse population of students within a social service setting. Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

    • Create effective proposals for establishing therapeutically-based trauma informed yoga programming within social service settings.
    • Deliver safe classes to under served populations with diverse needs.
    • Expand personal and professional teaching practices.

Students will deliver 5 trauma informed, strengths-based classes which will include education about the benefits of yoga as a complimentary modality in the management of depression, anxiety, stress, addiction and trauma symptoms.  All classes will be observed and students will receive and synthesize weekly feedback from their mentor to improve teaching proficiency.

INSTRUCTOR/MENTOR:
Nicole Marcia, MA, Certified Yoga Therapist has taught therapeutic Yoga classes and offered individual sessions to trauma survivors struggling with addiction, depression and anxiety since 2004. She is a Project Coordinator and Instructor at Langara Continuing Studies. She also trains Yoga teachers and clinicians in the trauma-sensitive Yoga theory and techniques required to support trauma survivors in their healing, long-term stability and recovery. In 2009, she was awarded a master’s degree in Yoga Therapy Studies from Lesley University in Boston, MA. Since then, she has been employed by the Provincial Health Services Authority at their Burnaby Centre for Mental Health and Addictions and teaches at Onsite; the treatment arm of North America’s first safe injection site.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
Successful completion of the Therapeutic Yoga for Trauma Resilience and Emotional Well-Being Certificate program 200-hour accredited Yoga Teacher Training Certificate or permission from the Program Coordinator. We have space for 7 teachers (2 at each site & 1 at the MDABC Wellness and Counselling Center). Placements will be determined once the cohort is full.
